Topic Four: The Future of Cable Networking and Infrastructure

Cable operators are the leading providers of broadband Internet access, and also offer competitive voice services using IP technology in addition to video services. To provide these services, cable operators have invested substantially in their networks to facilitate and accommodate advanced technologies, and are evaluating the pace and manner in which they will continue to increase capacity to provide expanded broadband capabilities.

Questions

  • Describe a vision for the cable network of the future, outlining the physical infrastructure, engineering requirements, and service capabilities necessary to maximize the advantages of hybrid fiber/coaxial infrastructure (HFC) design to deliver future-proof digital services.
  • What technological breakthroughs are envisioned for digital communication networks after the Internet?
  • What is the role of the cable industry in the deployment of next-generation broadband?
  • What engineering and technological barriers must be overcome in order to achieve future goals?
  • What advancements in network design, customer premises equipment (CPE), software and network engineering, and other technological characteristics of cable networks will be required to achieve these goals?
